9 Take-aways From Mary Meeker’s Internet Trends 2019

Bond Capital founder and former Kleiner Perkins general partner Mary Meeker’s annual Internet Trends report is the de facto State of the Internet presentation. First released in 1995, the report covers everything on the net from e–commerce growth, ad spends, to data growth and much more. The full report is well over 300 slides.

Below I have pulled out the 9 things I found the most interesting and relevant to DesignStudio’s business and client:

1. Effective + Efficient Marketing =  One’s Own Product + Happy Customers + Recommendations

2. Ad spending finally matches where people are. Mobile used to be outspent by Desktop but these are now even. I suspect it will tilt toward mobile next year, meaning mobile ad spending will become more lucrative.

3. The most important thing is to make sure the existing customer is happy rather than chasing after new prospects. (i.e.e Reviews & Recommendations are becoming more NB)

4. Adults are spending 3.5 hours on mobiles devices vs 2.0 on desktop. (Usage includes both home & work for consumers)

5. Time spent on Mobile vs TV (exclusively, not together) comes out in Mobile’s favor for the first time in the US.

6. Globally, Youtube & Instagram seeing an increase in time spent on their platforms, and a decrease on Facebook.

7. But daily hours spent on Social Media is declining for the second year in a row. (So where are they? Are they leaving Facebook or are they shopping/streaming/gaming?)

8. Image sharing (images, emojis vs just text) is becoming more and more prevalent.

9. Amazon, Twitter and Pinterest collectively saw 6-times year-over-year ad spending growth since 2017. Still smaller than Facebook & Google.
